Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

For many years I've wanted to run the London Marathon and at the ripe old age of 63 I am going to!! Having been shocked and surprised at getting a place through the ballot at my first attempt, reality hit that I could fulfil my marathon ambition and training had to commence!! This has been hard at times but it has progressed better than I expected, surprisingly I have enjoyed it.

I have chosen to run for the charity Bliss due to personal experience some 35 years ago. Our son Simon was born 6 weeks premature and was wonderfully looked after and cared for in Derby City Hospital's Special Care Baby Unit. There were a few occasions when it looked like he would be coming home but there was always a last minute hiccup to prevent it, it was heartbreaking but we picked ourselves up and waited for our next chance to bring him home. Then totally unexpectedly events took a terrible turn and Simon ended up on a life support machine having the fight of his very short life. Tragically it was a fight he could not win and a few days later we lost him at 5 weeks old to what turned out to be a very rare genetic condition.

The care and support given over that time for both Simon and us by all in SCBU was second to none, they were like a second family. So due to our experience and now knowing the support Bliss provide for premature and sick new born babies, along with their families, it just makes it an ideal choice for me to try and raise some funds for them while running the marathon and to do so in memory of Simon, who is so much loved and desperately missed each and every day.

Thanks for reading.   Roy

What a day, what an experience, what pain, what elation, this was my London Marathon. 5 hours, 44 minutes and 05 seconds but I got there!! The physical pain at 21 miles was beyond belief. Every bone ached, every muscle was on fire, every step was painful, I know now what "hitting the wall" is but I was determined to finish no matter what and I did. I would like to thank everyone who supported and helped me to raise money for the Bliss charity which is very close to my heart. I will be forever grateful. Once again a massive thank you to all
